Why We Set Intentions Before a Psilocybin Journey

One of the questions we ask before a psilocybin journey is:

"What is your intention?"

For many people, this question can feel surprisingly difficult.

Some arrive with a clear answer:

  • I want to heal grief.

  • I want to reconnect with myself.

  • I want to let go of fear.

  • I want clarity about a relationship or life transition.

Others stare at the question and think:

"I have no idea."

Both are completely okay.

The purpose of intention setting is not to create a perfect goal for the medicine experience. It is not about controlling the journey or demanding a specific outcome. In fact, some of the most meaningful journeys unfold in ways we never could have predicted.

Instead, an intention acts more like a compass than a destination.

It offers gentle direction while leaving room for the medicine, your nervous system, and your inner wisdom to reveal what is most important.

Intentions Are Different Than Expectations

One common misconception is that intentions and expectations are the same thing.

Expectations often sound like:

  • I need to heal my trauma.

  • I need to stop being anxious.

  • I need an answer.

  • I need a breakthrough.

Intentions tend to sound softer:

  • I want to better understand myself.

  • I am open to healing.

  • I want to explore what is beneath my anxiety.

  • I want to reconnect with compassion.

  • I want to learn how to trust myself.

Expectations can create pressure.

Intentions create curiosity.

The medicine does not always give us what we want. But it often offers what we need.

Questions Worth Sitting With

In the days leading up to a journey, it can be helpful to spend some time reflecting on questions such as:

  • What do I hope to learn, release, or better understand?

  • What am I longing for?

  • What feels unresolved in my life?

  • What beliefs about myself am I ready to examine?

  • What parts of myself need more love, compassion, or attention?

  • What fears have been shaping my choices?

  • What support am I hoping to receive?

  • What would healing look like right now?

There are no right or wrong answers.

Sometimes the most powerful intentions emerge quietly while taking a walk, journaling, sitting in nature, or simply listening to yourself.

The Intention Beneath the Intention

Over time, many people discover that beneath their original intention is something even deeper.

A person may arrive wanting to reduce anxiety and discover they are actually longing for safety.

Someone seeking clarity about a relationship may discover a desire to trust themselves.

Someone hoping to let go of grief may realize they are learning how to stay connected to love.

The journey often has a way of revealing what lives underneath the surface.

A Final Thought

You do not need a profound intention to have a meaningful journey.

You do not need the perfect words.

You do not need to know exactly what you are looking for.

Sometimes an intention can be as simple as:

"Show me what I need to see."

Or:

"Help me come home to myself."

At Wild Glow Alchemy, we view intention setting as the beginning of a conversation with yourself. A moment to pause, listen inward, and gently ask:

What is seeking healing, attention, or reconnection in my life right now?

The answer may begin before the medicine is ever taken 🌿
