What Actually Happens During a Legal Psilocybin Journey in Colorado?
Curious about psilocybin therapy but not quite sure what to expect? Let's walk through it together.
For many people, the idea of a psychedelic journey brings up a whole lot of questions.
Will I hallucinate? Will I lose control? What if I cry? What if nothing happens? Am I supposed to have some kind of life-changing spiritual awakening?
First things first: take a breath. You don't need to have all the answers before you begin.
At WildGlow Alchemy Natural Medicine Healing Center in Denver, Colorado, we believe that education, preparation, and feeling supported are essential parts of the psychedelic experience.
So let's pull back the curtain on what a legal, facilitated psilocybin journey actually looks like.
Step 1: Let's Talk — Your Initial Consultation
Before we ever talk about taking mushrooms, we want to get to know you.
Your journey begins with a consultation where we explore what brings you to psilocybin, what you're hoping to experience, and whether this approach may be appropriate for you.
Some people arrive with clear intentions. Others simply feel curious, stuck, disconnected, or ready to explore something different.
There's no perfect reason to be here.
We'll discuss your mental health history, medications, physical health considerations, and any potential concerns. Psilocybin isn't appropriate for everyone, and thoughtful screening is an important part of keeping this work as safe as possible.
This is also your opportunity to ask questions, get to know our approach, and decide whether the experience feels like a good fit.
You are never obligated to move forward just because you've had a consultation.
Step 2: Preparation — Creating a Foundation
Once you've completed the required screening and are ready to move forward, we'll schedule your preparation session.
Think of preparation as laying the groundwork for your experience.
Together with your facilitator, you'll explore your intentions, hopes, fears, and expectations. You'll also learn what to expect from psilocybin, including potential emotional, physical, and perceptual effects.
We'll discuss practical details, including:
The general timeline and flow of your medicine day
Dosing considerations and potential effects
Consent, boundaries, and supportive touch
Navigating challenging emotions or experiences
Bathroom safety and assistance
Transportation and aftercare arrangements
Colorado requires a preparation session before administration, and we often encourage additional preparation when it would be helpful.
Our goal isn't to script your experience. It's to help you feel informed, supported, and empowered as you enter it.
Step 3: Your Medicine Day — Arrive, Settle In, and Receive
This is the part most people are curious about!
On the day of your journey, you'll arrive at our healing center and settle into your designated space.
Our rooms are intentionally designed to feel comfortable, calming, and welcoming. Think cozy furnishings, soft lighting, blankets, and space to simply be.
Your facilitator will review the day's plan, check in with you, revisit important agreements, and answer any remaining questions.
When everyone is ready and the required procedures are complete, you'll receive your psilocybin.
What does psilocybin actually feel like?
The answer is different for everyone.
Some people experience changes in visual perception, a different relationship with time, heightened emotional awareness, or a sense of connection to themselves, others, or the world around them.
Others experience vivid memories, physical sensations, laughter, tears, or periods of deep stillness.
And yes, sometimes the experience can be confusing, uncomfortable, or emotionally challenging.
There is no right way to journey.
You don't need to have a mystical revelation. You don't need to cry. You don't need to uncover a hidden memory or solve every problem in your life.
Sometimes the most meaningful thing that happens is allowing yourself to rest.
Will someone be with me?
Yes. During your administration session, your licensed facilitator remains present and available to support your physical and emotional safety.
Your facilitator isn't there to dictate your experience or tell you what your insights mean. Their role is to provide a supportive environment, help you navigate challenges, and respond to your needs.
You remain an active participant in your experience, including communicating your boundaries and preferences.
How long does it last?
At WildGlow Alchemy, we generally plan for approximately 6–7 hours for an individual medicine day, depending on the experience and dosing.
The primary effects of psilocybin often last around 4–6 hours, although duration and intensity vary.
You won't be rushed out the door simply because the most noticeable effects have passed. Your facilitator will follow the required safety and completion procedures before you leave.
You'll also need a safe transportation plan, as driving afterward is not permitted.
Step 4: Integration — Making Meaning of the Experience
Here's something we wish more people knew:
The journey doesn't end when the medicine wears off.
In many ways, that's when another important part of the process begins.
Integration is the practice of reflecting on your experience and exploring how it might relate to your everyday life.
Maybe you experienced a new perspective on a relationship. Maybe you connected with grief you've been carrying. Maybe you realized how exhausted you are, or how difficult it has been to offer yourself compassion.
Or maybe you're not entirely sure what happened yet.
That's okay, too.
During integration, we'll help you explore your experience without forcing a particular interpretation or meaning.
Integration might include journaling, therapy, creative expression, movement, time in nature, changes in daily habits, or simply giving yourself permission to slow down.
Not every insight needs to become an action item. Sometimes the work is allowing an experience to unfold over time.
What If I'm Nervous?
Then you're human.
It's completely understandable to feel nervous about entering an unfamiliar state of consciousness, especially if you're someone who likes predictability or has experienced anxiety or trauma.
We welcome your questions, hesitations, boundaries, and concerns.
Being nervous doesn't automatically mean psilocybin is wrong for you, but it is worth exploring carefully. And choosing not to proceed is always a valid decision.
We believe that psychedelic work should never involve pressure, promises, or the expectation that you surrender your personal agency.
A Different Kind of Healing Experience
At WildGlow Alchemy, we believe meaningful experiences can happen when people are given space to slow down, turn inward, and explore themselves with curiosity.
We also believe in being honest: psilocybin isn't a cure-all. The emerging research is encouraging in certain areas, but results vary, and there are real risks and limitations.
Our approach combines professional support, thoughtful preparation, informed consent, and compassionate integration.
Whether you're exploring psilocybin for personal growth, self-discovery, or as part of a broader healing journey, you deserve accurate information and the freedom to make the choice that's right for you.
